Lake Park is in Lowndes County in south-central Georgia, near the Florida border. It’s conveniently located near I-75, equidistant between Gainesville, Tallahassee, and Jacksonville, Florida (about 1.5 hours by car).
First founded on agriculture when settled by European-Americans in the 1820s, in the 1880s Lake Park became a railroad hub on the Georgia Southern and Florida Railroad. In the 1920s the Twin Lakes “master suburb” was developed around Ponce De Leon and Balboa lakes and the newly constructed Twin Lakes Country Club.
Millions of dollars poured into the area to construct the infrastructure that still supports the area. This was part of the Florida land speculation craze that was a contributing factor to the 1929 Wall Street crash.
Much of this history can be found at the Lake Park Museum, which is managed by the Lake Park Historical Society.
Today Lake Park is not only a successful bedroom community but also a practical and interesting place to stay when travelling between Atlanta (3.5 hours) and Florida.
A wealth of accommodation options can be found in Lake Park. There are campgrounds, RV parks, cabins, bed-and-breakfasts, private vacation rentals, and a number of motels. Lake Park is also known for its many shopping options, including a number of outlet stores and antique shops. There are numerous dining options, including a surprising number of ethnic restaurants.
Many of the historical roots of Lake Park are still an active part of the community. Cotton production has returned after decades of downturn after a boll weevil infestation began in 1915. The area is also a major producer of carrots, known as the “Carrot Capital of the South.”
The area offers a wealth of fishing opportunities at the many lakes that dot the landscape, which also features magnolias and cypresses covered in Spanish moss.
The 18-hole Twin Lakes Country Club is located right in Lake Park and there are another half-dozen golf courses less than an hour’s drive from town.
Whether looking for a quick getaway or an interesting place to stay overnight while travelling to or from Florida, Lake Park gives you many reasons to stop by and stay awhile.
